This is the BEST place to get breakfast in all of Mexican Hat. Of course, you should know, it's then ONLY place to get breakfast in MH. But really, it's pretty good! Had the southwest Burrito and was pleasantly surprised! Give them a try when you're in Mexican Hat.

Had breakfast here after an overnight stay on our way to Monument Valley. Asked our server if I could order an item not on the breakfast menu -- their Navajo taco. I was able to. The portion was huge but it was way too soggy. I should have ordered it vegetarian style instead of topped with chili, which tasted like it came out of a can. However, the service was excellent and the décor was eclectic and charming.

Incrediable service! We came here for lunch after a long day of driving across the mid west from San Francisco. We were tired and hungry, and ordered the Navajo Tacos. They were awesome - huge piece of freshly made fry bread, chili, lettuce, cheese and salsa on the side. Very filling. Now what impressed me and won over the coveted 5 star review: I casually mentioned to the owner - Joey we were going on a sunset tour of the monuments and asked what time they closed. I found out that they close at 9pm, sometimes 10pm, and that there was nothing else in town open late. I was in a pickle; our tour didn't get out to 9:30 and we wouldn't be back until 10:30pm. So the owner gave me his cell number and told me to call him and that he would keep the restaurant and kitchen open late for us and personally cook us dinner if need be. Now that's service! For dinner we requested a special not on the menu item: Chicken Quesadilla made with Fry Bread. Oh man was it ever tasty!!! Now I want to point out to people no the food isn't the quality of the stuff you would get in San Francisco, New York, or another big city. It is however really good considering where you are. The middle of the desert - a place where cellphone barely work - heck this review took 2min to post because of the very slow Edge network. No 3G, 4G, LTE here!

Food was passable, but the Navajo Taco was authentic with the traditional fry bread, and onion rings were done well. The service was attentive and the decor authentic and fun. It's one of the only games in town so it gets 3 stars for what it is.

Basic good food. Not fancy, tasty and filling. Lovely, attentive service from the young men serving and the front counter helpers were open and friendly. I found the people who worked there to be very nice and ready to answer any questions with a smile. Definitely recommend.

This place has gotten better from the first time I ate here. I had a southwest breakfast burrito, the green chilli on top was perfect. It is very homey and fast service. I would recommend.

The food was not good, and even if the people were nice they seemed so confused about what was going on. We had to ask to get the menus, they gave us butter and jam then took it back for another table, we had the change from another bill (when it took us forever to get our bill), and it seemed so difficult to get the wifi password. But some people are nice and it is cheap (but once again, not good).

Nicely decorated place by the San Juan river in Mexican Hat. The sales person of the trading post recommend us this place. He even recommended margarita. I had stew with fried bread with a glass of margarita. Margarita came in a cactus shaped glass. I thought that was funny. Fried bread was too greasy. My sister had something with beans. She's a vegetarian. We both couldn't finish our food. There's one steak place besides this restaurant in Mexican Hat. Not much of choices, when you are that close to the Monument Valley in Navajo Nation...

I want to move to Mexican Hat, UT so that I can eat here every morning. Pancakes incredible, bacon heavenly, it was like eating at a Cracker Barrel or Denny's -but done perfectly. We sat at the window with a view of the river. everyone was so very nice. DO stop if you're in town!

Stopped in here as we were passing through Mexican Hat shortly after lunchtime. The place has cool historic look and feel to it from the outside and the inside is no different. We were the only patrons in the place at the time and the owner gave us his undivided attention and answered many questions for us. He is a genuinely great guy. We took a few pictures of the old beer bottles and other decor inside and waited for our authentic Navajo food to arrive. Our food arrived before we could even manage to get 1 game of pool in - which costs a mere 50 cents. We ordered the Navajo Taco and the Navajo Cowboy Beef Sandwich. The Navajo taco was HUGE and loaded with fresh, high quality toppings. The flavor of the fry bread was top notch. The overall flavor was maybe a touch bland, but the addition of a small amount of hot sauce fixed that right away. I would rate the Navajo Taco as a 4.5. The second item was the Navajo Cowboy Beef sandwich which is basically a roast beef sandwich on Frybread. The roast beef was a touch on the dry side, but when added to the moisture of the Frybread, it was left with a great texture and flavor. The sandwich had much more flavor than the taco and it too was loaded with both meat and fresh vegetable toppings. The sandwich rates as 5 star in my book. We were traveling through during the offseason and this was the only place to eat that was open in Mexican Hat. I would certainly stop by again and enjoy the great food. If you want true, authentic Navajo food, then this is the place to stop. It is also worth noting that this place sits just off from the Navajo reservation, so they offer a full service Bar.

Traveling through the Monument Valley area there are very few places to eat. We rode up to Mexican Hat and decided to try the first place we saw open (and in Mexican Hat on a Sunday, the only place open midday!). What a delight! Yes, a bit run down on the outside, sadly the San Juan River looked more like a mud puddle, and it could have been a bit cleaner BUT... The people were very friendly. We seated ourselves and were offered a drink almost immediately. Icy cold Margaritas hit the spot. They have a limited menu but with something that would please most people. Visiting the Navajo Nation, we decided on the Native Tacos made with Navajo Fry bread. YUM! Tacos as big as your head, the bread was fresh, light and crisp. Tacos are filled with chili (or retried beans for the veggie version) lettuce and cheese - simply but tasty. Service was quick and efficient. Definitely would stop again if we are in the area!

We ate at the Old Bridge Grill for dinner and breakfast the following morning when we stayed at the San Juan Inn & Trading Post, which is on the same property. We enjoyed both meals and emerged with full and happy tummies. Please understand that this place is in the middle of the desert. To coin an overused phrase, it is what it is. It's basic food, and it isn't fancy. If you want fancy, stay in the big city. Here, the burgers are great and the beer is cold. The salads are fresh and the fries are yummy. The breakfasts are hearty. What really impressed us was the service. Our visit coincided with that of a busload of French tourists. The place--not small--was packed. The waitstaff and management alike made a huge effort to attend to all of the diners' needs, and we were very impressed with their effort. As I mentioned to VVSP the morning we had breakfast there, I'll bet there wasn't another eatery anyplace else where you'd hear English, Italian, French, Swedish, Spanish and Navajo spoken in the same room at the same time.

I stopped here with my mom during a road trip east after passing through Monument Valley. We ate here because we wanted to stay at the Inn the restaurant is located near. Let's just say we decided to get food elsewhere for breakfast the day after our dinner. We both ordered a steak and we're unhappy with it. Mine might as well have been boiled for all I could tell. There was no sear on the meat and it was cooked the same all the way through. The salad was floating in a puddle of water. I gave an extra star for the service. They are quick and very nice. However their food doesn't stand up to their service. If you are passing through, keep going. If you are staying at the inn, think about eating before hand.

We stopped by one morning after camping out for a few nights. There were about 15 of us, and I got the feeling that this place wasn't accustomed to dealing with such large groups. A few drinks were forgotten and about half of us got our food 15 minutes after the other group, but since this place is so small it was forgivable. I ordered the grilled cheese and it left a little to the imagination. It looked like someone had just put some American cheese on some toast, and hadn't melted it. Oh well. It was cheap. Good coffee, most people in my group ordered breakfast foods, and everything else looked delicious. In short, nothing to write home about, but it's not terrible.

Cool little place built right on the side of the canyon. The owner Joey has many stories about the movies filmed nearby. I had the vegetarian taco, which was greasy but authentic. I will definitely stop here the next time I'm in the area.

They have some of the finest local craft beers such as Squatter's, and a waiter who served us was very helpful. He even went to the store in the next door when I asked him about a local beer that I ordered. I actually didn't like my vegetarian tacos because it's got so much refried beans on it, but my boyfriend who is a very picky eater enjoyed his steak. Despite the not so vegetarian tacos..., I stilled loved the place because of the friendly people and good beer selections. I will be sure to stick with some basic food items the next time... haha

I used Monument Valley as my base and passed through the Hat on my way to do some hiking around Natural Bridges. Stopped here for dinner. Passable food, good service. There's a pool table. Normally I'd give this 3 stars, but it's worth pointing out that since Monument Valley is a dry area on the Reservation, this place is the closest to it that serves alcohol. That sweet, golden nectar in that dry land just had to bump up their rating!

My wife and I agree. It was our worst dining ever. The Navajo Taco was excellent fry bread ruined by flavorless warmed over meat, iceberg lettuce from a bag, refried beans and diced tomatoes from cans - no seasoning no taste. We had been backpacking for three days and almost anything would have been tasty. Awful. Awful. Awful. That was two years ago. This time we drove an extra 45 min to Kayenta even though we were starving after four days of backpacking.

They have a 50 cents/per pool game! Good place to stop since you're in the middle of nowhere. The Navajo tacos were interesting. The dough tasted pretty good. Couldn't finish my food cause mexican refried beans make me full easily. This place was probably one of the places that understand the term "warm water". Props to the server for that. (It's hard to get warm water here in the US, you either get cold or hot).

Happened upon this place while driving north up 163 to visit Goosenecks from Monument Valley. Very low-key and cozy inside, perched directly between the San Juan river and the overlooking bluffs. We felt as though we had come across one of those magical places you only get to at the right time and in the right state of mind - you know, Midnight in Paris style. The menu was well priced and entrees were easily share-able. And wow, was that vegetarian Navajo taco ever delicious. The opportunity to wash down dinner with a cold pale ale after our day outside was also a welcome treat. Service from the owner was great.

Very conveniently located to San Juan Inn (walking distance). Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Standard breakfast items. Pretty decent eggs and hash browns. Had vegetarian Navajo taco for dinner. The bread was good but taco was too heavy with the refried beans. Would recommend this dish if you don't like refried beans.
